Permaculture is capturing energy and cycling it around. Any permaculturist knows that when we flush the toilet, we flush away valuable captured energy that creates a problem somewhere else for there is no away in nature. We have to face up to the fact that we are mammals and that we produce manure.
And why not? When we treat this human manure in the right way it becomes a rich asset to our permaculture system. It becomes a rich compost that feeds your soil wonderfully. If you feel it is a step too far, why not feed it to your trees?
Introducing a compost toilet into your system is sometimes easier said than done. There is still a prejudice against human faeces and urine. We are still facing many problems from legislative bodies and neighbours when we are trying to introduce composting toilets into our permaculture projects.
So Earth Ways has teamed up with a civil engineer with experience in human waste systems to design a simple, yet effective humanure composting system. It has been approved by Sepa and some local Environmental health bodies have already confirmed that they will accept this system.
It is made from local sourced timber, has no toxins in it, it does not smell or leak liquids into the soil, does not attract vermin or flies and is designed to be easy to clean and fits so neatly together that it prevents ‘accidents’. It comes with a handy leaflet that explains it all. You can buy the system in the picture, but also a shed to put it in and a compost bay system to make it complete. We might even come and put it up for you 🙂

Designed with two compost bays and a central covered storage area, using untreated, chemical free, locally sourced Larch.
Untreated Larch is very durable and choosing to leave it straight from the tree ensures no nasty stuff finds its way into your beautiful compost.
This system allows you to fill one bay for a year or so, then switch to the other bay allowing you to empty the first before the second is full.
We can provide further bays on request.
The central covered bay is for storing straw, hay, sawdust etc for covering the compost heap as it is filled. Or you can make it into the compost loo itself
